At this time, only EastWest PLAY and the Vienna Instruments are 64-bit. The use of any 32-bit VSTi's on this system immediately switches it to 32-bit mode. Native Instruments, PLAY and Vienna Instruments products must be assigned to their own individual hard drive.
Rack vs. Tower?
It depends on the libraries you have and how many hard drives are needed. Rack Mount units usually have enough space for four (4) drives.
Which Libraries/Players Are 64-bit
EastWest PLAY, the Vienna Instruments and Tascam's GigaStudio 4 are 64-bit on the PC. GigaStudio 4 is PC only. On the Mac, EastWest PLAY and the Vienna Instruments are currently 32-bit.
Software from Native Instruments is still 32-bit and is not scheduled to be released in 64-bit format until Q1 2009.
Audio Cards
If you're wanting a PC System for the Vienna Instruments, you DO NOT need an audio card, nor do you need a hardware or software MIDI interface. You need Vienna Ensemble v3 which is installed on your Vienna system and must also be installed in your Sequencing DAW. The Sequencing DAW must have a Gigabit LAN connection. Once connected with a LAN cable, audio and MIDI data are streamed between the two systems.
All other libraries at this writing need an audio card and MIDI connections.
